Senior Capstone Design: Northern Inland Towing Vessel

For my senior capstone design project, my team spent the year developing a commercial towing vessel. This vessel is intended to push barges through the inland river systems of the United States, with particular focus on northern sections.

The team iterated through the ship design spiral; developing a hull, selecting a suitable propulsion system, determining seakeeping ability, and calculating crewing costs, and more.

Our design efforts resulted in a 150 ft long, 873 LT vessel with z-drive propulsion and telescoping pilot house to facilitate access through low bridges of the northern Mississippi river system.

For this project, our team were recognized with the 2019 SNAME Undergraduate Paper Award!
